Mental Health Matters: Supporting and Uplifting Our Black Boys

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a dedicated time to reflect on the emotional well-being of our children and communities. While mental health is a universal priority, it holds a unique urgency for Black boys. Growing up today means navigating a complex intersection of identity, high societal expectations, and intense emotions all while frequently dealing with pressure to conform to a standard of unbroken strength and emotional silence.

Far too often, Black boys are taught to internalize their struggles. When emotional distress does arise, it rarely looks like textbook sadness. Instead, it often manifests as uncharacteristic withdrawal, sudden silence, increased frustration, or behavioral changes. To break this cycle of silent struggle, we must actively reshape how our boys experience and express their emotions. As parents, educators, and leaders, we can support them by creating safe, judgment free spaces for open dialogue, validating their experiences by reminding them that “it’s okay to feel overwhelmed,” and modeling healthy emotional expression ourselves. When we show our own vulnerability, we give them permission to do the exact same.

Beyond conversation, building their internal armor requires active, daily reinforcement. Utilizing tools like the SONshine Affirmation Cards is an excellent way to ground them before they step out into the world. By teaching them to look into the mirror and declare, “I am Brave. I am Bold. I am Brilliant. My feelings matter,” we help them internalize their inherent worth.

To help put these concepts into practice at home, try the interactive activity below with your son this week.

The “Emotional Armor” Shield Activity

This hands-on activity helps boys visualize their strengths, identify their safe support systems, and normalize expressing their feelings through creativity.

Materials Needed:

  • A large piece of paper or cardboard (cut into the shape of a classic shield)

  • Markers, colored pencils, or crayons

  • Scissors and glue

  • Optional: Your SONshine Affirmation Cards

Instructions for the Activity:

  1. Divide the Shield: Have your son draw two crossing lines to divide his shield into four equal quadrants.

  2. Fill in the Four Quadrants: Guide him to draw or write the following in each section:

    • Top Left (My Strengths): Write three words that describe what makes him unique and strong (e.g., Kind, Athletic, Creative).

    • Top Right (My Safe Zone): Draw or write the names of 2–3 people he can always talk to when he is feeling sad, angry, or overwhelmed without being judged.

    • Bottom Left (My Coping Toolkit): Draw things that help him calm down when life gets heavy (e.g., listening to music, playing basketball, deep breathing, drawing).

    • Bottom Right (My Daily Declaration): Write down a powerful anchor affirmation, such as: “I am Brave. I am Bold. I am Brilliant. My feelings matter.”

  3. The Anchor Discussion: Once the shield is complete, have him hold it up. Use this moment to reinforce the lesson: “Just like a shield protects a warrior in battle, your affirmations, your coping skills, and the people who love you protect your mind. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, look at this shield to remind you of who you are.”

  4. Display It: Hang the completed shield on his bedroom wall or the bathroom mirror where he can see it every single morning.
